    حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَ أَمْرُنَا وَفَارَ ٱلتَّنُّورُ قُلْنَا ٱحْمِلْ فِيهَا مِن كُلٍّ زَوْجَيْنِ ٱثْنَيْنِ وَأَهْلَكَ إِلَّا مَن سَبَقَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلْقَوْلُ وَمَنْ ءَامَنَ ۚ وَمَآ ءَامَنَ مَعَهُۥٓ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ

    (40) [So it was], until when Our command came and the oven overflowed,^[559] We said, "Load upon it [i.e., the ship] of each [creature] two mates and your family, except those about whom the word [i.e., decree] has preceded, and [include] whoever has believed." But none had believed with him, except a few.

    [559]- As a sign to Noah of the imminence of the flood. The tannūr is a large, rounded oven. The word can also mean the earth's lowlands.

    Covers verses 40

    {40} {حتَّى إذا جاء أمرُنا}؛ أي: قدرُنا بوقتِ نزول العذاب بهم، {وفار التنُّور}؛ أي: أنزل الله السماء بالماء المنهمر، وفجَّر الأرض كلَّها عيوناً، حتى التنانير التي هي محلُّ النار في العادة وأبعد ما يكون عن الماء تفجَّرت، فالتقى الماءُ على أمرٍ قد قُدِرَ، {قُلْنا} لنوح: {احملْ فيها مِن كلٍّ زوجين اثنين}؛ أي: من كلِّ صنف من أصناف المخلوقات ذكر وأنثى؛ لتبقى مادَّة سائر الأجناس، وأما بقيَّة الأصناف الزائدة عن الزوجين؛ فلأنَّ السفينة لا تُطيق حملها، {وأهْلَكَ إلاَّ مَن سَبَقَ عليه القولُ}: ممَّن كان كافراً؛ كابنه الذي غرق. {ومَنْ آمن و} ـ الحال أنه ـ {ما آمَنَ معه إلا قليلٌ}.
