   وَلَئِنْ أَخَّرْنَا عَنْهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابَ إِلَىٰٓ أُمَّةٍ مَّعْدُودَةٍ لَّيَقُولُنَّ مَا يَحْبِسُهُۥٓ ۗ أَلَا يَوْمَ يَأْتِيهِمْ لَيْسَ مَصْرُوفًا عَنْهُمْ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

   (8) And if We hold back from them the punishment for a limited time, they will surely say,^[549] "What detains it?" Unquestionably, on the Day it comes to them, it will not be averted from them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

   Tafsir as-Sa'di (Arabic)

   Covers verses 8

   {8} {ولئنْ أخَّرْنا عنهم العذابَ إلى أمَّةٍ معدودةٍ}؛ أي: إلى وقت مقدَّر فتباطؤوه، لقالوا من جهلهم وظلمهم: {ما يحبِسُه}؟! ومضمونُ هذا تكذيبُهم به؛ فإنهم يستدلُّون بعدم وقوعه بهم عاجلاً على كذب الرسول المخبر بوقوع العذاب؛ فما أبعد هذا الاستدلال. {ألا يوم يأتيهم} العذابُ {ليس مصروفاً عنهم}: فيتمكَّنون من النظر في أمرهم، {وحاق بهم}؛ أي: نزل {ما كانوا به يستهزِئون}: من العذاب حيثُ تهاونوا به، حتى جَزَموا بكذب مَنْ جاء به.
