   أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ نَبَؤُا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَعَادٍ وَثَمُودَ ۛ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ ۛ لَا يَعْلَمُهُمْ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ ۚ جَآءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ فَرَدُّوٓا۟ أَيْدِيَهُمْ فِىٓ أَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا كَفَرْنَا بِمَآ أُرْسِلْتُم بِهِۦ وَإِنَّا لَفِى شَكٍّ مِّمَّا تَدْعُونَنَآ إِلَيْهِ مُرِيبٍ

   (9) Has there not reached you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and ʿAad and Thamūd and those after them? No one knows them [i.e., their number] but Allāh. Their messengers brought them clear proofs, but they returned their hands to their mouths^[651] and said, "Indeed, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."

   [651]- Several explanations have been given as to the meaning. Based upon the conclusion of the verse, Ibn Katheer preferred that this was a gesture of denial and rejection.

   {9} يقول تعالى مخوِّفاً عباده ما أحلَّه بالأمم المكذِّبة حين جاءتهم الرسل فكذَّبوهم، فعاقبهم بالعقاب العاجل الذي رآه الناس وسمعوه، فقال: {ألم يأتِكُم نبأ الذين من قبلكم قومُ نوح وعادٍ وثمودَ}: وقد ذكر الله قصصهم في كتابه وبسطها. {والذين من بعدِهم لا يعلمُهم إلاَّ الله}: من كثرتهم وكون أخبارهم اندرست؛ فهؤلاء كلُّهم {جاءتهم رسلُهم بالبيناتِ}؛ أي: بالأدلة الدالَّة على صدق ما جاؤوا به، فلم يرسل الله رسولاً إلا آتاه من الآيات ما يؤمِنُ على مثلِهِ البشرُ؛ فحين أتتهم رسلُهم بالبينات؛ لم ينقادوا لها، بل استكبروا عنها، {فردُّوا أيدِيَهم في أفواههم}؛ أي: لم يؤمنوا بما جاؤوا به، ولم يتفوَّهوا بشيء مما يدلُّ على الإيمان؛ كقوله: {جعلوا أصابِعَهم في آذانهم من الصواعِقِ حَذَرَ الموت}. {وقالوا} صريحاً لرسلهم: {إنَّا كَفَرْنا بما أرسِلْتم به وإنا لفي شكٍّ مما تدعوننا إليه مريبٍ}؛ أي: موقع في الريبة.
