   لِّيَسْـَٔلَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ عَن صِدْقِهِمْ ۚ وَأَعَدَّ لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا

   (8) That He may question the truthful about their truth.^[1184] And He has prepared for the disbelievers a painful punishment.

   Footnotes

   [1184]- i.e., that He may ask the prophets what they conveyed to their people and what response they received. "The truthful" may also refer to those who believed in the message conveyed by the prophets and imparted it to others.

   Covers verses 7 - 8

   {7 - 8} يخبر تعالى أنَّه أخذ من النبيِّين عموماً ومن أولي العزم - وهم هؤلاء الخمسة المذكورون خصوصاً - ميثاقَهم الغليظَ وعهدَهم الثقيل المؤكَّد على القيام بدين الله والجهادِ في سبيله، وأنَّ هذا سبيلٌ قد مشى عليه الأنبياءُ المتقدِّمون، حتى خُتموا بسيِّدهم وأفضلهم محمد - صلى الله عليه وسلم -، وأمر الناس بالاقتداء بهم، وسيسأل الله الأنبياء وأتباعهم عن هذا العهد الغليظ؛ هل وَفوا فيه وصدَقوا فيثيبهم جناتِ النعيم، أم كفروا فيعذِّبهم العذاب الأليم؟ قال تعالى: {من المؤمنينَ رجالٌ صَدَقوا ما عاهَدوا الله عليه}.
