    وَحِيلَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ مَا يَشْتَهُونَ كَمَا فُعِلَ بِأَشْيَاعِهِم مِّن قَبْلُ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ فِى شَكٍّ مُّرِيبٍۭ

    (54) And prevention will be placed between them and what they desire,^[1243] as was done with their kind before. Indeed, they were in disquieting doubt [i.e., denial].

    [1243]- Meaning the attainment of faith and its benefits or entrance into Paradise.

    {54} {وحِيل بينَهم وبينَ ما يَشْتهونَ}: من الشهواتِ واللَّذَّاتِ والأولاد والأموال والخدم والجنودِ، قد انفردوا بأعمالِهِم، وجاؤوا فرادى كما خُلِقوا وتَركَوا ما خُوِّلوا وراءَ ظهورهم، {كما فعل بأشياعِهِم}: من الأمم السابقين حين جاءهم الهلاك حيل بينَهم وبينَ ما يشتهون. {إنَّهم كانوا في شكٍّ مريبٍ}؛ أي: مُحْدِث الرِّيبة وقلق القلب؛ فلذلك لم يؤمِنوا، ولم يعتَبوا حين استُعْتِبوا.
