    قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ إِلَىٰ نِعَاجِهِۦ ۖ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْخُلَطَآءِ لَيَبْغِى بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَقَلِيلٌ مَّا هُمْ ۗ وَظَنَّ دَاوُۥدُ أَنَّمَا فَتَنَّـٰهُ فَٱسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّهُۥ وَخَرَّ رَاكِعًا وَأَنَابَ ۩

    (24) [David] said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord^[1325] and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allāh].

    [1325]- For his errors, such as fear and suspicion of the two men at the outset, any mistake in judgement he might have made, concealed feelings of partiality, etc.

    {24} فقال داود لما سمع كلامَه، ومن المعلوم من السياق السابق من كلامِهِما أنَّ هذا هو الواقع؛ فلهذا لم يحتج أن يتكلَّم الآخرُ؛ فلا وجهَ للاعتراض بقول القائل: لِمَ حَكَمَ داودُ قبل أن يسمعَ كلام الخصم الآخر؟ {لقد ظَلَمَكَ بسؤال نعجتِكَ إلى نعاجِهِ}: وهذه عادةُ الخُلَطاء والقرناءِ الكثير منهم، فقال: {وإنَّ كثيراً من الخُلَطاءِ لَيَبْغي بعضُهم على بعضٍ}: لأنَّ الظُّلم من صفة النفوس {إلاَّ الذين آمنوا وعملوا الصالحاتِ}: فإنَّ ما مَعَهم من الإيمان والعمل الصالح يمنعُهم من الظُّلم، {وقليلٌ ما هم}؛ كما قال تعالى: {وقليلٌ من عِبادي الشَّكُورُ}. {وظنَّ داودُ}: حين حَكَمَ بينَهما {أنَّما فَتَنَّاهُ}؛ أي: اختبرناه ودبَّرْنا عليه هذه القضيةَ ليتنبَّهَ، {فاسْتَغْفَرَ ربَّه}: لما صدر منه، {وخَرَّ راكعاً}؛ أي: ساجداً، {وأناب}: لله تعالى بالتوبة النصوح والعبادة.
