   ٱلَّذِينَ يُظَـٰهِرُونَ مِنكُم مِّن نِّسَآئِهِم مَّا هُنَّ أُمَّهَـٰتِهِمْ ۖ إِنْ أُمَّهَـٰتُهُمْ إِلَّا ٱلَّـٰٓـِٔى وَلَدْنَهُمْ ۚ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَيَقُولُونَ مُنكَرًا مِّنَ ٱلْقَوْلِ وَزُورًا ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَعَفُوٌّ غَفُورٌ

   (2) Those who pronounce ẓihār^[1639] among you [to separate] from their wives - they are not [consequently] their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they are saying an objectionable statement and a falsehood. But indeed, Allāh is Pardoning and Forgiving.

   Footnotes

   [1639]- The saying by a husband to his wife, "You are to me like the back of my mother," meaning unlawful to approach. This was a type of divorce practiced by the Arabs before the prophethood of Muḥammad (ﷺ).

   {2} {الذين يظاهِرونَ منكم من نسائِهِم ما هنَّ أمَّهاتِهم إن أمَّهاتُهم إلاَّ اللاَّئي وَلَدْنَهم}: المظاهرة من الزوجة أن يقولَ الرجل لزوجته: أنت عليَّ كظهرِ أمِّي، أو غيرها من محارمه، أو أنت عليَّ حرامٌ. وكان المعتاد عندَهم في هذا اللفظ الظهر، ولهذا سماه الله ظِهاراً، فقال: {الذين يظاهِرون منكم من نسائِهِم ما هنَّ أمَّهاتِهم}؛ أي: كيف يتكلَّمون بهذا الكلام الذي يعلمون أنَّه لا حقيقة له، فيشبهون أزواجهم بأمَّهاتِهم اللاَّتي ولدنهم؟! ولهذا عظَّم الله أمره وقبَّحه، فقال: {وإنَّهم لَيقولونَ منكراً من القول وزوراً}؛ أي: قولاً شنيعاً وكذباً ، {وإنَّ الله لَعَفُوٌّ غفورٌ}: عمَّن صَدَرَ منه بعضُ المخالفات فتداركَها بالتَّوْبَةِ النَّصوح.
