    وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍۭ بَطِرَتْ مَعِيشَتَهَا ۖ فَتِلْكَ مَسَـٰكِنُهُمْ لَمْ تُسْكَن مِّنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ۖ وَكُنَّا نَحْنُ ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ

    (58) And how many a city have We destroyed that was insolent in its [way of] living, and those are their dwellings which have not been inhabited after them except briefly.^[1114] And it is We who were the inheritors.

    Footnotes

    [1114]- By travelers seeking temporary shelter. The reference is to the ruins which were visible to the Quraysh during their journeys.

    Covers verses 58

    {58} ولهذا توعَّدهم بما فعل بالأمم قبلَهم، فقال: {وكم أهْلَكْنا من قريةٍ بَطِرَتْ معيشَتَها}؛ أي: فخرتْ بها وألهتها واشتغلتْ بها عن الإيمان بالرسل، فأهلكهم الله، وأزال عنهم النعمةَ، وأحلَّ بهم النقمة، {فتلك مساكِنُهم لم تُسْكَن من بعدِهِم إلاَّ قليلاً}؛ لتوالي الهلاك والتَّلف عليهم وإيحاشها من بعدهم، {وكُنَّا نحن الوارثينَ}: للعباد؛ نميتُهم ثم يرجِعُ إلينا جميعُ ما متَّعْناهم به من النعم، ثم نعيدُهم إلينا، فنجازيهم بأعمالهم.
